Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders back on with ring issue ‘sorted’ after quit threat

Boxing: Saunders says Canelo ring issue has been solved

Billy Joe Saunders has laid to rest the issue surrounding his concerns on the ring size for his fight this weekend against Canelo Alvarez. Saunders made it clear that he was ready pull out earlier this week after learning that the ring size was going to be just 16/18ft.

“For me, that’s just unacceptable. I want a 24ft ring and they’re saying it’s not gonna happen,” Saunders said on Tuesday.

“I’ve left it to my team and I’m sure they’ll resolve it, otherwise there won’t be any fight.”

And the WBO super-middleweight champion even skipped the first face-off with Alvarez on Tuesday amid concerns the fight may not go ahead.

Saunders’ team confronted Alvarez on Tuesday as the WBA and WBC world champion walked through the hotel lobby.

John Ryder has also been flown out to Dallas and is ready to step in as Saunders’ replacement.

But it appears as though the issue over the size of the ring has now been resolved after Saunders gave an update on social media.

“I just want to say the issue is sorted,” Saunders said on his Instagram story.

“As you can see, I tagged [Matchroom Boxing promoter] Eddie Hearn and Canelo in the last video and the ring is not a problem, so thumbs are up.”

Saunders was in bed as he gave the update to his followers, adding: “Chilling back, watching a few films and, Eddie, get the ring in, mate.”

Alvarez also indicated that he was happy to yield to a bigger ring while mocking Saunders for his “excuses”.

“He has to fight Saturday, the fight is going to happen, that’s not a problem,” Alvarez said

“The truth is, I don’t care about the size of the ring. I’m going to go in there and do my job.

“It’s not the only excuse that he’s had, he’s had plenty of excuses. I’m just going to go in there and do what I got to do.

“Nothing frustrates me. I’m just focused on winning on Saturday. I’m calm,” said Canelo.

It was always unlikely that Saunders would pull out of the fight at the last minute in what will be the biggest purse of his career.

Forfeiting the unification bout would have seen him lose out on a reported £7.2million pay night, while there would also be huge compensation figures to pay.
